CORFU
Friday, September 26th, Corfu (Greece)
Everyone had breakfast on their own, while Lisa and MJ were ambitious and attended stretching and tai chi classes.
Met in the Michelangelo Room at 10 am to catch the tender to Corfu, an island halfway between Italy and Greece.
As it was a gorgeous day, sunny and a 73 degrees that felt more like 80, we walked into town - a little more than a mile. Passed the new fortress, which certainly didn’t look new. According to Lisa, “It’s probably lost that new fortress smell.”
Did some shopping. Jo bought a great dress and belt. Tom wanted a little more excitement, so he went off on his own to climb the hill and explore the old fortress.
Terri, Lisa, and Jo checked out Corfu’s claim to fame - kumquat liquer. After sampling it to make sure it didn’t taste like orange Triaminic, it was decided to buy a big bottle since it was the most economical. Okay, the cheapest. Later we remembered the ship’s liquor rules, however, and exchanged it for two smaller bottles which Darrell and Tom snuck through security in the pockets of their cargo shorts.
Had a great lunch. MJ and Jo had killer moussaka. All tried taramousalata. Terri had her first Greek salad in Greece. Darrell had his first ouzo. In Greece.
Walked down to the waterfront, and while Tom swam, the rest of us waded in the Ionian Sea. The rocks were killers, and a surprise wave drenched Terri’s shoes, making for an uncomfortable walk back to ship.
Tom and Terri had an early dinner then went to the magic show. The rest of the group ate in the Michelangelo Room, then headed back to their own rooms. Darrell went out to see what was happening, and caught the end of the “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” show. Decided he’d have to catch the rest the next night.
